Learning Chess at Home

MISSION

The Scholar’s Mate Chess Academy was established in 2018 to teach youth how chess can be fun and exciting while empowering them to think ahead and calculate the consequences of their actions before taking them.  Regardless of a child’s ability we make chess fun for all! We want our students to understand that they are in control of their lives and that if equipped with the proper tools they can achieve their dreams.

PROGRAMS

Our After-School Programs are held at participating schools and community centers.  Our programs are taught by dedicated, knowledgeable instructors that incorporate variation of chess games that build teamwork and enjoyment for each student.  We also offer private virtual lessons year-round.

fun facts

Initially, the Queen could only move one square at a time, diagonally.  Later, she could move two squares at a time, diagonally.  It wasn’t until Reconquista Spain, with its powerful queen Isabella, that the Queen became the strongest piece on the board.

TESTIMONIALS

Nina Harris

My name is Nina Harris, and I utilized The Scholar's Mate Chess Academy for my Autism life skills program.  None of my children, not even my volunteers, knew how to play chess prior to our contact with Coach Chelly of The Scholar's Mate Chess Academy.  I originally had parents skeptical of the program due to their child's level of comprehension, but was pleasantly surprised to see how quick the kids picked up the concepts.   The program is kid friendly, or chess novice friendly would be a better description, because I had adults learning right along with our children.   I have every intention on utilizing The Scholar's Mate Chess Academy in the future.  I was beyond pleased with the rendered services, and would not hesitate to recommend this chess program to other institutions.

"Coach Chelly is amazing with her students, teaching them the fundamentals of chess through a fun and engaging way.  I was so surprised to see such young students learn chess so quickly through her program.  Also, her and her staff are very professional, loving with the children, and easy to work with.  I highly recommend this program to any family out there."
